Generally rare to locally uncommon in North Carolina, Savanna Cowbane is on the NC Watch List and grows in seepages in the sandhills and pine savannas in the coastal plain. The old common name of Piedmont Cowbane is a bit of a misnomer.

Formerly called Oxypolis ternata, recent research shows that the correct name is O. denticulata.
