Rocky Face Mountain Vistas, Alexander Co., NC

Although located well within the piedmont, Rocky Face Mountain in Alexander Co., NC is part of the Brushy Mountain range and is reported to be the easternmost mountain in the Appalachian chain. The mountain boasts lots of granite outcrop habitat supporting many species of uncommon to rare plants. The mineral composition of the rocks breaks down to yield an uncommon, thin, relatively high pH soil type. Where the soil is thicker, one finds the forest dominated by Virginia Pine and Chestnut Oak.

View of rural landscape as seen from Rocky Face Mountain. While hiking up on Rocky Face is nice, we were never out of earshot of barking dogs, farm animals, and motorized vehicles.
