Common in the Carolina coastal plain in and near pine and pocosin edge habitats. Formerly classified as Chondrophora nudata.

Flowers are composed of all disk flowers and no ray flowers, hence the common name.

Leaves are highly reduced.

Basal leaves (brownish and fading here) are wider in this species than in the other species of Bigelowia found farther south in GA.
