Brown Water Snake (Nerodia taxispilota)

Brown Water Snakes live in lakes, streams, millponds, and similar habitats in the eastern half of North Carolina. Good climbers, they often bask in the lower branches of trees & shrubs over water, into which they will plunge when disturbed. Like all water snakes in the genus Nerodia, they are non-venomous.
