Found in mountain streams, springs, and seepages, Black-bellied Salamanders (often called Blackbelly Salamanders) occur in the southern Appalachians.

When young, they lack the distinctive black belly patches.

Note two lateral rows of white spots along the body and the white line from the eye to the jaw.
