Rare and local in NC, apparently restricted to the large fresh to slightly brackish marshes around the base of the Cape Fear River near Wilmington where access for seaching for this butterfly is limited. It may be quite common there (or not), but thorough surveys have not been carried out.
Two broods apparently fly in NC, early summer and late summer. The host plant is one of the large marsh grasses, probably southern wild rice (Zizaniopsis miliacea) and/or wild rice (Zizania aquatica).
Similar in appearance to Delaware Skipper, Rare Skipper is generally larger and usually shows a taller, more pointed forewing (especially in males). Note also that Rare Skippers usually have a dark spot, often hook-shaped, on the underforewing jutting just above the hindwing. Additionally, Rare Skippers are usually duller than the Delaware Skippers, which are usually more bright, rich orange or bright yellow-orange. Brunswick Co., NC13 Aug 2006 |
