Eastern Comma (Polygonia comma)

Statewide in NC (but less common toward the coast) and widespread in eastern North America, commas are one of the few groups of butterflies that overwinter as adults.

The dorsal shot looks like a Gray Comma, and probably is, although when I was in the field I shot the ventral, the butterfly flushed a few feet away and landed and I shot the dorsal. However, the butterfly I flushed must've disappeared and another one popped up. Thanks to Rick C. for noticing this!
