Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

Statewide and common in NC, Red-bellied Woodpeckers are found throughout the eastern U.S. and are common back yard feeder birds.

Note the black and white ladder-barring pattern on the back which distinguishes this species from other woodpeckers in NC. The male (top left) has red feathering complete across top of head from neck to bill. Females (right) have gray foreheads.
