22 January 2005 Raleigh Landfill Gulls

On Saturday 22 Jan 2005, Derb Carter, Harry LeGrand, and Jeff Pippen spent 3.5 hours studying the gulls at the landfill in N. Raleigh, NC. Skies were evenly overcast, providing excellent viewing conditions for scanning flocks of gulls. Wind was light, and the temps were in the 20s. We stood on top of the landfill about a hundred feet or so from the trucks and bulldozers dumping and working the trash. We were surrounded by gulls! Here are our estimated tallies:
Ring-billed Gull: 20,000
Herring Gull: 300 - 400
Lesser Black-backed Gull: 5 - 6
Great Black-backed Gull: 2 - 3
California Gull: 1
