Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus)

Common along the NC coast, Great Black-backed Gulls scavenge for food and also will harrass other birds, including Northern Gannets, forcing them to give up their meals.

Adults have white heads, pink legs, and the back and wing color is the darkest of all the gulls on the east coast.

The largest gull in NC, 1st winter Great Black-backed Gulls have mostly white heads and white tails with dark terminal bands. (Compare to the 1st winter Herring Gull in the lower right in this photo.)
