Rare in the North Carolina piedmont, but becoming common in the mountains, Coltsfoot grows in cool, moist, gravely disturbed areas including roadsides.

Introduced to the northeastern US from Eurasia, Weakley reports that Coltsfoot is spreading southward rapidly and predicts it could become common in the NC piedmont.

This population has been growing at a research facility in the Duke Forest for several years, under some evaporative equipment used to warm up very cold liquid carbon dioxide resulting in a cool, moist microclimate favoring the growth of Coltsfoot.
