Over a hundred species of this family are found. Most are very small (less than 6mm long, according to bugguide.net) and are yellow, brown, or black. Many have colored eyes.

This tiny yellow woodland fly was found perched on a leaf. ID based on matching the photos and description in bugguide.net, however the online NC State Insect collection lists no members of this family in the collection.
