Centipedes (Chilopoda)

Unlike millipedes, centipedes have only one pair of legs per body segment, and centipedes can deliver a venomous bite. Centipedes are generally fairly fast runners and are found in a variety of habitats, but not usually in very wet or very dry places.

This individual was at least 3 inches long and was found under a rock in the Duke Forest.

According to Jeff Beane at the North Carolina Museum of Science, this is the only blue-gray colored scolopendrid in the NC piedmont.

Centipedes tend to be much flatter than millipedes.
