Marsh Periwinkles are important in the decomposition and nutrient cycling of cordgrass in salt marshes, feeding on algae and detritus. They are also an important food source for blue crabs and various marsh birds.

During low tide, the animals close themselves tightly within their shells to avoid dessication.
