Locally common in the southeast corner of the state in NC.

This female Roseate Skimmer quickly and repeatedly dipped her abdomen in a scoop-like pattern (always facing the shore) to lay her eggs in the shallows less than a foot from the muddy shore. The male perched nearby and chased off anything that flew near her while she did this.
