Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (Nyctanassa violacea)

Uncommon along the edges of streams, ponds, swamps, etc., mostly in the eastern half of the state. Yellow-crowned Night-Herons nest in/near the tops of cypress, tupelo, and pines in very small colonies or solitary.

This fairly rare inland colony consists of about a half-dozen nests along New Hope Creek in Durham County. Note the second adult on this nest in the lower left of the photo.
