This bird represents a first state record. This Tufted Duck was originally found by Hop Hopkins.

All photos below were handheld digiscoped and taken in early morning light (before 10am EST) at the Archie Elledge WTP in Winston-Salem, Forsyth Co., NC on 1/31/2009.

Note nearly black back, chest, and rear boxing in a rectangular-appearing white side with a slight point at the shoulder. With its short tuft, this is likely a young male.

Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) Head color when seen well up close in good light is a purplish sheen. However, when viewed at various angles from a distance, the sheen may appear purple, green, or black.
