Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator)

A large, native swan that breeds from Alaska to scattered locations in the Rocky Mountains and Great Lakes (re-introduced there). As populations rebound and reintroduction programs thrive, expect more records of this species in North Carolina in the winter in places like Lake Mattamuskeet.

An apparent family group of Trumpeter Swans was observed for a couple of weeks in a small farm pond in southern Nash Co., NC in Feb, 2009. There is no question as to their identity, but the NC Bird Records Committee tendered a vote of Questionable Origin as escaped birds could not be ruled out. Regardless, they are beautiful birds and rarely seen in the wild in North Carolina!
