Red Knot (Calidris canutus)

Uncommon in migration and winter along the North Carolina shoreline. This species is in serious decline worldwide.

These chunky shorebirds are larger than Sanderlings and have relatively short-medium length, straight bills. Note Sanderling in photos for comparison. In the winter, Red Knots lose their reddish coloration and are gray with barred flanks.
