Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima)

Rare along the NC coast except in a few specific locations where they are found in small numbers every year. The most reliable place in NC to see this species is along the rock jetty at the south end of Oregon Inlet.

Note light orange legs, feet, and base of bill, which is very slightly downcurved near end. Head is a smooth dark gray in winter plumage.

Sandpipers often sleep on one leg with the other leg tucked up into their belly feathers.
