Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritis)

Common in winter in the eastern half of North Carolina.

In winter plumage (left bird), Horned Grebes show white cheeks with black on the upper half of the head. In breeding plumage (upper right bird is approaching breeding plumage), the heads become black with yellow ear patches while their necks and sides turn rufous. Birds in transitional plumage (lower right) are often observed in March/April.
