Rare but regular winter visitor to Cape Hatteras shores. More common in open seas offshore from the Outer Banks.

Immature Black-legged Kittiwakes have a bold black "M" across the back & wings, a black bar across the nape, and a black-tipped tail.

Normally seen well offshore, they are occasionally seen along the Outer Banks beaches.

Unfortunately, this kittiwake most likely came to shore because of a leg injury.
