Black-browed Albatross (Thalassarche melanophris)

Accidental in the North Atlantic, this is the second record for North Carolina.

Normally found in the Southern Hemisphere from southern South America to New Zealand, this may be the first photographed live adult Black-browed Albatross in the United States.

No other species has the combination of pink-tipped yellow-orange bill, black brow line on a white head, and thick black borders on the underwing.

The bird was found less than 2 miles from land (seen in the background of this photo) off the village of Hatteras, NC near the Hatteras Inlet.
